Personal History: Her mother, Tomoko, had moved to America many years ago in the hopes of having a better life. She met a Vietnamese man named Hoàng Mai and married him. Hoàng enrolled her into a karate class in the second grade because he wanted her to be strong. Mika’s family decided to move to Portland, Oregon from Cerris City, California, when Mika was in third grade so Hoàng could help his older brother take care of his mother who had bronchitis at the time. She got into tennis after her new friend made her play tennis at the park with her and her dad enrolled her into tennis class afterwards. Her family is in the upper middle class since her father is a businessman. During the 10th grade, her family transferred to Tokyo because of her father’s work, and she attended Hyōtei Academy until graduating high school then she moved back to Portland.
